Apple VR

One thing that I find remarkable about the Apple VR headset is that while everyone in the promotion pictures is present through webcam, the person wearing the headset clearly is not. 👀

So what would those people meeting her see instead? For me, this signifies that *if* the VR headset does take off as means for work, it must lead to broader adoption of virtual avatars.

It correlates with a development that can be observed at Microsoft product development, who will be introducing “Mesh” for Teams which will allow for virtual avatars to coexist next to “traditional” web cam presence as shown in the screenshot attached.

I believe that over time, we will begin to accept these “avatars” more seriously as alternatives to opening up a webcam potentially showing all kinds of distracting things especially when working remote (home office, other people in the house, and so on). Just like putting on some nice clothes for an interview, you could personalize your avatar to match your personality. This will reduce the importance of how you look to be successful which I believe is a positive development.
